FESTIVAL INFO:

The Bendigo Easter Festival returns to Bendigo from THU 2nd to SUN 6th of APRIL, 2015. The Bendigo Easter Festival and a free Community Festival for all the family to enjoy over the long weekend.

Since 1870, the Bendigo Easter Festival has played a key part in the Victorian festival calendar.

Evolving over the years, to culminate in its’ current format, the Festival is an iconic fun-filled event. It offers something that no other event does. Today, the festival continues this tradition, showcasing Bendigo’s diverse community and cultural heritage. Our goldfields heritage is celebrated annually through the cultural displays of the Bendigo Chinese Association during the festival. The Torchlight Procession and Gala Parade are an opportunity for the Bendigo community to express their artistic talent and culture. The Bendigo Easter Festival is the oldest ongoing festival in Australia and in 2015 will celebrate it's 145th anniversary. It is an integral part of cultural life in Greater Bendigo and we look forward to highlighting many sections of Bendigo’s heritage during the festival.

Visitors to Bendigo and local residents come together to celebrate the Easter Weekend, with an abundance of activity and entertainment. With heaps of live music, art and craft stalls, family friendly activities, food and retail stalls, there is something different to experience and enjoy each day.

Whether you are looking for a fun way to entertain the family on the long weekend, this event provides something for everyone to enjoy.

Awakening of the Dragon

A unique experience in Bendigo, performed in front of large crowds who gather along Bridge Street in the afternoon, before Sun Loong is due to walk the streets of Bendigo. Prior to the awakening lion dancing, dragon dancing, folk dancing and music-making providea colourful event for young performers from all over Australia to display traditional dance movements performed with traditional musical accompaniment. It is also a chance for the Bendigo Chinese Associations own performing teams to show off their many hours of practice.

The ‘Dance of the Lions’ gives the performers an opportunity to display intricate and symbolic movements. The dances of the lions are designed to tease the dragon to a state of awakening. Along with the lions, firecrackers are used, as it is necessary to make a lot of noise to wake an Imperial Dragon.

At the end of all the dances, a finale of 100,000 firecrackers is used to ensure that the Imperial Dragon is awakened.

Torchlight Procession& Fireworks

Enjoy a spectacular display of illuminated floats and the spectacular Chinese section featuring YarLoong the night dragon. Don't forget to cheer on our local emergency service heroes as they march through the streets.

Line the streets from View Street/Rowan St roundabout, Pall Mall, McCrae Street and Chapel Street to get a glimpse of all the lanterns, colour, sirens, music, marching bands, lions and spectacular night dragons.

Following the end of the procession, keep an eye out for a magnificent fireworks display.
